Here are some ways to help a family have a Thanksgiving meal or nice Christmas. The following groups also need volunteers and food or toy donations.
1. Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida is accepting $30 donations to feed families. Drop off your cash or check donation at the church missions desk on Sunday mornings or church office by November 22rd. For more information, go to http://www.calvary.us or call 727-441-1581
2. Donate food items or money to your church food pantry. Schools, businesses and non-profits such as Toys for Tots also are having food or toy drives this holiday season.
3. Bring frozen turkeys or non-perishable food items to your community food bank or Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, Florida. See video report above or at http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-1061217.
Metropolitan Ministries is accepting food, toy and other donations now. It has 3 holiday tents to receive donations in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.The non-profit wants to help 23,000 struggling families this Thanksgiving and Christmas. They include households barely getting by with minimum-wage incomes or lost their federal SNAP benefits to pay for food. The donations tent in Tampa is at a new location this year. PIO Gwen Harmon says the holiday donations tent was moved a few blocks away to Palm Avenue to make room for Miracle Place, a 52-unit apartment complex, which recently opened. The old site also is being used to a new chapel and youth enrichment center in the future.
Here are the locations to drop off food and new toy donations this year:
Hillsborough: 400 W. Palm Avenue, Tampa, FL 33602, 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Pasco: 3214 U.S. Hwy 19, Holiday, Florida 34691, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
Pinellas: 1550 Belcher Road South, Largo, FL 33771, Now through Nov. 26th and Dec. 2-18th.
