A construction worker in an Apollo Beach, Florida subdivision was rescued late this afternoon after being trapped in a muddy hole. The worker was in a field near the subdivision’s retention ponds to work on pipe irrigation. As mud and water rose to the man’s waist, two or three workers nearby rushed to save him from sinking further, according to WFLA-TV. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue workers arrived shortly to pump water out and remove dirt away from the trapped worker. After more than 3 hours, the construction worker was freed just before 6 p.m. and taken to a hospital for treatment. The unidentified construction worker appeared to be in good spirits. He was able to sit up and talk with rescuers as he was loaded onto a cart that took him to a waiting ambulance.
