For 100 people, camping out 24 hours or longer paid off at the Chick-fil-A on Waters Avenue in west Tampa. It was all part of the franchise’s Grand Re-Opening. WFLZ 93.3 FM broadcast the event live this morning as television news helicopters hovered above.
The first 100 local Tampa Bay area residents in line received free 52 Chick-fil-A Meals for a year for their efforts. The 100th person to qualify got in line at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Many started waiting in line and setting up tents in the parking lot on Tuesday, Chick-fil-A staffers said.
“They took care of us. They entertained and fed us while we waited the whole time,” said a woman, who camped outside to receive Chick-fil-A meals for a year.
The Waters Avenue location is the largest in the national chain, according to Kerri Carter, the restaurant’s manager. The former building was demolished this spring. The new restaurant is twice the size with more drive-thru lanes, too.
After serving the people who won the free meals, the new Chick-fil-A restaurant opened to paying customers at 6 a.m. For the first dozen customers who arrived around 5:30 a.m, Chick-fil-A gave them a gift card for 1 free meal.
