The search continues for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Malaysia government officials declared the mysterious disappearance of the jetliner an accident and MH370 passengers and crew are “presumed dead.”
The official declaration on Thursday allows the families of those presumed dead to continue with compensation claims with Malaysia Airlines or insurers.
“It is therefore, with the heaviest heart and deepest sorrow that, on behalf of the government of Malaysia, we officially declare Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 an accident in accordance with the Standards of Annexes 12 and 13 to the Chicago Convention and that all 239 of the passengers and crew on board MH 370 are presumed to have lost their lives,” said Azhanuddin Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Director.
Flight MH 370 vanished on March 8, 2014 after departing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on its way to Beijing, China.
The international search led by Australia has been in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of Australia. That’s where the plane is believed to have gone down. No wreckage of the missing airplane has been found since it disappeared.
