Many came out this weekend to the Fourth Annual Cuban Sandwich Festival in Ybor City’s Centennial Park. On Sunday, it was “The Big Smackdown Day” when restaurants from all over the United States competed to win the 2015 title of “The Best Cuban Sandwich in the World.” TIA’s Latin Food from Largo, Florida won the title, according to WFLA-TV. VIPs and celebrities tasted entries in the Tampa Historic Cuban Sandwich and Non-traditional Cuban categories from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Ybor City Museum Gardens. The World’s Best Cuban Sandwich and Popular Cuban Sandwich were judged from 1:30 p.m.- 3 p.m. Sunday. Besides Cuban sandwiches, Largo, Tampa area and South Florida Cuban restaurants also offered Paella and popular Cuban dishes. Visitors also could try food and deserts from West Africa, Puerto Rico and Hawaii at the festival.
Latin Times Media, Inc, FMCRC, City of Tampa and YCDC sponsored the festival. The event also was a fundraiser for Emberlynn Padilla, a 3-year-old baby born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
