Updated April 21, 2015 – Hughes returned to his home in Ruskin, Florida late Sunday night.  He remains suspended from his job at the U.S. Postal Service and is under house arrest. Hughes told reporters he flew the gyrocopter to the Capitol to draw attention to campaign finance reform and political corruption.

Doug Hughes, a 61-year-old mailman from Ruskin, Florida made a special delivery to the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, April 15th.  Hughes flew his gyrocopter with 535 letters to 535 members of Congress about campaign finance reform and landed safely on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol.  The gyrocopter flew into restricted airspace, straight over the National Mall, past the Washington Monument before it landed in front of the Capitol.  Police quickly surrounded  and arrested Hughes, who surrendered peacefully.  The stunt surprised police, Secret Service and visitors who saw the gyrocopter fly and hover near them around 1:20 p.m. ET. Before yesterday’s flight, Hughes told friends and supporters of what he planned to do through his website, http://www.democracyclub.org. and interviewed with the Tampa Bay Times weeks before he flew the gyrocopter to Washington, DC. Hughes told the Tampa Bay Times he was doing it because the United States is “heading full-throttle toward a breakdown,” Hughes said. The Federal Aviation Authority is investigating the incident.
