“It is with great sorrow that Alex’s Southern Style Barbeque announces the tragic loss of Alex Cooks, Sr.”
His barbeque restaurant has served many customers in Carrollwood, North Dale and Citrus Park in Tampa. Cooks moved here from Mobile, Alabama. Cooks also is well known for giving away over 20,000 bicycles to underprivileged children in the Tampa area on Christmas Day through his charity since it opened in the Fall of 1999. His restaurant remained open today until 3 p.m.
Many of his customers, neighbors and friends stopped by to express their condolences to the family and the staff. One of them was Doug DeHart, Cooks’ longtime customer, neighbor and friend. DeHart says Cooks broke down the racial barriers when he opened his business in Carrollwood.
Many also ordered a barbeque meal, Cooks’ favorite barbeque pork sandwich or to help fill the donations jars for Cooks’ children’s bicycles in his memory today. Cooks founded the restaurant with partner, James “Jimbo” Coates in 1994. Cooks’ sons say they will keep the restaurant open and their father’s bicycles non-profit, Alex’s X-mas for Kids, will continue.
Cooks is survived by his wife, 4 sons and a grandson. The family asks that in lieu of flowers to make donation to Alex’s X-mas for Kids or through http://www.alexsbbqtampa.com.
The restaurant’s address is 5362 W. Village Dr. , Tampa, Florida 33624 in the Carrollwood area. Phone number: 813-269-0050
