The gun buy-back program is part of Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Police Chief Eric Ward’s  efforts to make this summer safer and to lower the number of crimes involving guns.  There has been a steep rise in gun violence over the past year. Police investigated 443 gun-related crimes from January 1 through June 1st this year.

Last year, there were 320 gun-related crimes within the same 6 months.

With a generous donation from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation, the city is hosting this Saturday’s gun buy-back. The mayor and police chief urge parents whose children may have a gun and adult gun owners who no longer need their guns to take advantage of the gun-buy back. Police say that will lower the risk of guns stolen during a burglary.

For more information,  contact Tampa Police, One Police Center, 411 N. Franklin in downtown Tampa or call TPD at 813-276-3200 (Main number). The Non-Emergency number is 813-231-6130. For Emergencies, call 911.
