U.S. Census Testing in Houston and LA

The U.S. Census has chosen Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California to test and refine methods and technologies to reach people who don’t respond to the national headcount in preparation for the 2020 Census. Both metropolitan areas were chosen for testing because they are large and demographically diverse areas with a significant level of language diversity, varying levels of Internet usage, and high vacancy rates.

The testing will take place in parts of Harris County, Texas and Los Angeles County, California from March through August 2016. The U.S. Census bureau will contact approximately 225,000 households each in Houston and Los Angeles.

Now through August 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau is mailing out the questionnaires to households for testing.  Houston and Los Angeles area residents will be able to respond to the Census forms in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean by Internet or mail. For anyone who needs help completing the Census test questionnaires, there also will be telephone assistance provided in Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic and French.

Households that don’t reply back may get a visit from a census taker to complete the Census test form.

The U.S. Census test will have the following questions:

  1. How many people were living or staying in the house, apartment, or mobile home on April 1, 2016?
  2. Were there any additional people staying here April 1, 2016, that you did not include in question 1?
  3. Is this a house, apartment or mobile home: owned with a mortgage, owned without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent?
  4. What is your telephone number?
  5. What is Person 1’s sex?
  6. What is Person 1’s age and date of birth?
  7. Which race and Hispanic category describes Person 1?
  8. Does Person 1 sometimes live or stay somewhere else?

There also are follow-up questions for each additional person in the household about their relationship to the person filling out the Census test form.
