Asia Fest Tampa 2016 kicked off the 33rd annual celebration of National Asian Pacific American Month, which is May. With the international dragon boat races and Amalie Arena nearby, the festival continued to draw a more diverse crowd and Tampa Bay Lighting fans, too. Some festival goers also wore colorful Asian silk dresses and costumes. For young Asian Americans in Tampa, the festival also was a time to reconnect with their Asian roots.
This year’s festival represented Burma, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The Asian Coalition of Florida says the festival’s goal is to share Asian culture with the public and to encourage friendship and a better understanding between Eastern and Western cultures.
The annual all-volunteer Asian festival has been held in downtown Tampa since 1982.
