WHEN: June 4 (tournament day, dusk until dawn) – June 5 (weigh-in, 10:30 a.m.)
WHERE: Weigh-in at Clearwater Yacht Club (830 Bayway Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33767)
DETAILS: The 2016 Southern Open, the second of four tournaments in the Super Series of Spearfishing, takes place statewide on Saturday, followed by a weigh-in on Sunday at Clearwater Yacht Club. A large portion of the catch will go to Metropolitan Ministries to feed residents living on campus and those who are hungry in the Tampa Bay community.
Metropolitan Ministries serves 2,500 meals a day to its 100 families on campus and its 29 meal sites in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk Counties.
“It’s hard to hang on to hope when you don’t know where you next meal is coming from. The fish we receive from this event will go a long way to feeding those we serve on a daily basis,” said Metropolitan Ministries’ Senior Director of Food Service and Social Enterprise Cliff Barsi. “Our first priority is to reach out to meet the most urgent needs of poor and homeless men, women and children by providing them with dignified, nourishing meals.”
Metropolitan Ministries will receive approximately 2,000-pounds of fish, ranging from grouper and redfish to hog fish and amberjack after Sunday’s weigh-in. The Ministries will have a refrigerated truck on hand, filling it as the catch from each competitor comes in and is donated.
