Visit a national park this summer or anytime this year. This August 2016 is the centennial celebration of the National Park Service.
Yellowstone National Park with Old Faithful and natural geysers is America’s first national park. Yellowstone was established by an act signed by President Grant. Forty four years later, President Woodrow Wilson created the National Park Service on August 25, 2016. This August marks the 100th birthday of the National Park Service which employs 22,000 diverse full-time, temporary and seasonal people and has 221,000 volunteers.
During a quick summer weekend trip, we visited the NPS Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.
Along the way, we drove on historic Route 66 which starts in Chicago and goes through Springfield, Illinois, St. Louis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Santa Fe-Albuquerque, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona and ends in Los Angeles, California. Route 66 also is the Will Rogers Highway and known as the Main Street of America. Ted Drewes is on Route 66 in St. Louis and serves the best old-fashioned frozen custard we’ve ever had.
If you’re on the barbeque, Dim Sum or Italian food trail, there’s Sugarfire BBQ on Washington Street in downtown St. Louis. Beef brisket, pulled pork and the ribs are delicious and tender. Their BBQ is very popular. Lulu’s serves Chinese Dim Sum and dishes with curry, too. Head to The Hill area in St. Louis for wonderful Italian pizzas, toasted appetizers, pastas, sauces and other family-style Italian dishes.
