Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies and citizens caught up with this fleeing carjacking suspect and wrong-way driver on Wednesday afternoon. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says a citizen reported a motorcycle going west in the wrong direction in the emergency lane of I-4 near McIntosh Road around 3:11 p.m. HCSO in the air and deputies followed the motorcyclist going south on I-75 south toward Brandon Town Center on SR 60. The deputies approached him at the Barnes & Noble there and asked the man to turn over the motorcycle to them. The suspect told the deputies he was driving the wrong-way on I-4 to look for the rear seat which blew off. The suspect took off on the motorcycle and went to the Citgo station at Adamo Dr. where he bought a t-shirt. He fled on foot, jumping over fences to Adamo Drive. The suspect waved down an eastbound truck driver on Adamo and offered the driver money for a ride. Sensing something was wrong, the truck driver refused. HCSO says the suspect then tried to pull the truck driver out of his vehicle, but the driver and his passenger fought off the suspect. Another citizen saw what was happening and helped deputies catch the suspect.
The motorcycle’s owner from Lakeland responded and plans not to bring charges against the suspect for having the motorcycle.
However, Corey Levon Johnson, Jr., 22 years old, of Buccaneer Drive in Lakeland faces charges of fleeing to elude at high speed, driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license, resisting arrest by an officer twice, carjacking and battery.
