Local churches also will have their own July 4th celebrations and Vacation Bible Schools.  VBS at Chinese Baptist Church Houston is July 10-14 for children 4 years old through 5th grade.   Register your child at

During the summer break, visit a National Park.  Mammoth Cave National Park (Kentucky) was established in July.

Family-friendly, cheap places to visit in Houston, Texas

Hermann Park — The park has a zoo, McGovern Centennial Gardens, Railroad Train rides, a Japanese Garden, Pedal Boat rides, areas to enjoy a family picnic and the Miller Outdoor Theater.  Park hours are 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.  Other venues in the park open at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.  For points of interest, or visit   Hermann Park is located near the Texas Medical Center and Houston’s Museum District near Rice University.

Houston Museum of Natural Science at Hermann Park– There’s also a Planetarium, Butterfly Center and permanent exhibits here.  Admission is $25 (adults); $15 for children 3-11 years old and college students with valid ID.  Visit

The Galleria —  Houston’s premier indoor shopping destination has high-end, designer stores, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillards,  Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, H & M and other stores to fit your shopping budget. It’s also known for its indoor ice-skating rink with a large food court and restaurants.  Great place to walk, window-shop with the family, too.  Open daily at 10 a.m.

Designer Outlet Shopping Malls –Katy Mills in Katy, Texas. Take 610 west to Katy and follow exit signs to the mall.  On your way to the Galveston beaches, there’s also Tanger Outlets at 5885 Gulf Freeway or 45 South.  Follow highway exits to both outlet shopping malls. Open daily at 10 a.m.

Battleship Texas in La Porte, Texas – Take a self-guided tour of the historic battleship that served in World War 1 and WW 2.  The battleship historic site is located at 3523 Independence Parkway.  Open daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  For more information, call 281-479-2431

Space Center Houston – This is the official Visitors Center of the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake, Texas.  Everything NASA and Houston’s role in America’s space program is here.  Tickets are $29.95 (adults) and $24.95 (children 4-11 years old).  You can save $5 per ticket with a coupon at MacDonald’s, Randall’s grocery stores, Walmart  or with an AAA membership or military I.D.
