Winter Storm Warning for Houston

Runs: 0:49

As the winter storm warning continues, Houston officials are asking people to stay off the roads and stay indoors to allow emergency vehicles to respond. Warming centers also have opened for the homeless, the elderly and Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston. Call 311 for a ride to a warming center. A homeless person died from exposure to the frigid weather.

Today the wet bitter cold formed icicles on vehicles, traffic signs, Metro busses and made Houston area roads treacherous. Many schools, universities, businesses and roads closed because of the icy conditions. Those who ventured out today drove carefully and at slower speeds on highways and Houston streets.

The National Weather Service says another round of snow and ice will impact the central and eastern United States. Nearly half of Texas is under a winter storm warning, hard freeze or winter advisory.  Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama also are under hard freeze warnings tonight.

For updates on closings and the weather, tune in to local stations, National Weather Service or NWS Twitter.
